Access Law Clinic’s experienced solicitors provide confirmation of Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) for individuals pursuing a career as solicitors through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) pathway in England and Wales. This new route to qualification has replaced the traditional requirement of completing a formal training period, previously known as a ‘training contract,’ before becoming a solicitor. Competence is evaluated through the SQE assessments. Additionally, the QWE no longer needs to be undertaken at an organisation regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).

The introduction of the SQE has therefore provided greater flexibility and more opportunities for aspiring solicitors to obtain their QWE. The SRA stipulates that this experience must be confirmed by a solicitor or a Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP). The supervisor or another individual at the placement is unable to sign off on the QWE for the aspiring solicitor, or
The organisation opts to outsource the QWE sign-off to a confirmation service.

What is QWE?

Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) is one of the four key components required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) that aspiring solicitors must complete as part of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) pathway. Successfully fulfilling this requirement is essential for an individual to be admitted to the roll as a qualified solicitor in England and Wales.

What counts as QWE?

Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) can be obtained in England and Wales or internationally, and it is not required to specifically focus on English and Welsh law. Aspiring solicitors can accumulate QWE across up to four different organisations, with the total duration needing to reach a minimum of two years.

For experience to qualify as QWE, it must involve the provision of legal services, allowing the aspiring solicitor to develop some or all of the competencies necessary for practising as a solicitor. Importantly, the work experience must involve providing legal services and must not be a simulated exercise.

QWE can be either paid or voluntary and can be acquired in a variety of settings, including but not limited to:

A work experience placement (including during a law degree)
Working as a paralegal
On a training contract
Working at a voluntary or charitable organisation or a law centre
Working in a law clinic
Working in an in-house legal department

This broad and flexible approach to QWE allows aspiring solicitors to gain relevant experience in diverse legal environments, which can help them develop the practical skills required for qualification.

When should QWE be completed?

Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) can be completed at any time before, during, or after taking the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) assessments. There are no specific requirements regarding when to undertake QWE; the only stipulation is that it must be fully completed before applying for admission to the roll of solicitors. This flexibility allows aspiring solicitors to gain the necessary work experience at a pace and in a sequence that suits their individual circumstances and career plans.

How is QWE confirmed?

Aspiring solicitors need to register the full two years’ QWE by the time they apply for admission as a solicitor. A separate application to register QWE will be required for each organisation that the work experience takes place.

They can register a completed period of QWE at any time allowing for confirmation to take place prior to completion of the SQE assessments. This may be beneficial for example if they are due to leave a role or because they want to use a previous role as QWE and avoid any delay in qualifying.

QWE must be registered with the SRA through their website. On submission of the application the solicitor of England and Wales or COLP nominated will be notified by the SRA and requested to confirm the QWE.

QWE Further Consultation and Advice - £375

Book a consultation with a QWE Specialist to assess your work experience to date. During the 30-minute consultation you will be provided with guidance on suitability and any criteria that must be fulfilled. Where required you will be provided with examples of how to ensure your role can meet the competences. You will receive a detailed summary of the assessment.

The fee includes:

A further 30 minute consultation with a QWE Specialist.
Initial review of your current work experience.
Review of suitability.
Guidance on any required criteria.
Written summary of the assessment.

If you use our QWE Review and Confirm service at any time within 2 years following the consultation you will receive a £150 discount on the service per placement.

QWE Full Review and Confirm Service - £675

£675 per placement

Our QWE Full Review and Confirm Service is provided for those who have previous or current work experience involving the provision of legal services but are unable to have it confirmed by a solicitor or Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) from their organisation.

If you are confident that your work experience involved the provision of legal services, and you are ready to have your placement reviewed without using our QWE Initial Consultation and Advice service to determine suitability, please complete the online form below.

Ensure that you attach your ID verification documents.

The fee includes:

A full review of your submitted QWE training record by a QWE Specialist.
Guidance on the qualifying criteria should any amendments or updates to the QWE training record be required.
A further review of the updated training record by a QWE Specialist (if required).
Verification checks relating to your identified placement or employment
QWE verification between Access Law Clinic’s solicitor and your nominated supervisor
Written confirmation to you that the QWE verification has been completed and Access Law Clinic’s solicitor is able to approve the identified QWE in whole or in part.
Coordination and confirmation of the QWE following your mySRA submission.

Once making payment you will have 30 days to submit your completed QWE Training Record for review. It is your responsibility when making payment that you will be ready to submit your QWE Training Record. No refund will be payable in the event that you fail to submit your QWE Training Record within the required time period.

Please note that the fee is not refundable in the event that your work experience is determined by our QWE Specialist or Solicitor to not amount to legal services. If you are unsure, please use our QWE Initial Consultation and Advice service.

Our partner Law Training Centre has created a QWE Training Record that is free to use to record information relating to your QWE. It allows you to list your placement details, provide examples of your qualifying work experience and outline how you meet the competences.
